Hyderabad protest after controversial boundary call

Confusion prevailed during the South Zone T20 between Karnataka and Hyderabad after two runs were added to Karnataka’s total at the end of their innings. With Hyderabad eventually falling two runs short of the changed target, the team stayed back in the middle and “asked to start the Super Over.” Their request did not pan out but it did delay the start of the next game at the same ground, between Kerala and Andhra, which was eventually shortened to 13-overs-a side.

Hyderabad’s angst was a result of a piece of play in the the second over of Karnataka’s innings after fielder Mehdi Hasan‘s foot came in contact with the ropes during an attempt to stop the ball at deep midwicket. While the on-field umpires Abhijit Deshmukh and Ulhas Gandhe didn’t refer it to the third umpire, replays showed that Hassan’s foot had touched the boundary. Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar was seen remonstrating with the umpire at the start of Hyderabad’s chase following which two runs were added to Karnataka’s total.

Hyderabad captain Ambati Rayudu, though, was unhappy with how the issue was handled by the umpires, and contended that Vinay held up play for nine minutes. He maintained that Hyderabad were batting with a target of 204 in mind, before Karnataka’s total was revised from 203 for 5 to 205 for 5. With Hyderabad having finished on 203 for 9, Rayudu said his team had asked for the Super Over to be played.
